                The Whale, 2022
Joep van Lieshout is a Dutch artist and sculptor, born in 1963, who founded the Rotterdam-based art studio Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL) in 1995. His work spans sculpture, furniture design, installations, and architecture, often blurring the lines between these disciplines. Van Lieshout's creations are provocative and explore themes such as autonomy, self-sufficiency, and societal structures, often presented through a stark, industrial aesthetic using materials like fiberglass and recycled metals. Notable projects include "SlaveCity," a dystopian design concept, and "The Technocrat," which melds community living with production. His impactful works have been exhibited globally, continuously pushing the boundaries of art and design.
